Interviewing Tips for Candidates:
Resume:
- Bring at least two copies of your resume with you. The copies
should be originals and not photocopies.
- Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. If you
are currently unemployed you need to show that on your resume
so as not to misrepresent yourself to your potential employer.
- If you have never had a resume professionally done, it may
be worth the investment to do so as this is the company’s
first impression of you.
Dress:
- Men should wear a dark suit and tie. Shirts should be button
down, starched and shoes should be polished.
- Women wear a navy blue or black suit or pantsuit, neutral
pantyhose and low heels or flats. Limit jewelry to a watch,
conservative earrings, and no more than one ring on each hand.
- Avoid colognes, perfumes and smoking prior to the interview
as well as eating foods such as onions, garlic, etc.
Directions to the Interview:
- Always get directions to your interview at least one day
in advance to ensure that you are on time.
- If going to a manufacturing facility, find out where to park
and who to check in with, etc.
Preparation:
- Review the company’s website and the job description.
Go through the requirements on the job description and prepare
notes of applicable experience, if possible.
- Find out the names and titles of the people that you will
be interviewing with. Prepare separate questions for each of
them as it pertains to the title of that individual.
Ask Questions:
- Have your questions prepared before hand. While some questions
may come up during the interview, it’s nice to have some
already in mind.
- Do not ask about salary or benefits on the first interview.
It is better to let the employer bring this up.
Know Yourself:
- Think about real strengths and weaknesses that you have
recognized in yourself. Be prepared to describe how you’ve
corrected your weaknesses and give examples of your strong
characteristics to demonstrate your abilities.
Send a Thank you:
- After every interview you should send a thank you note.
Thank the interviewer for his/her time and express your continued
interest in the position. Also, address any issues or concerns
that may have come up in the interview, but keep it relatively
short.
